Beginners course to improve your English. This course is for people who have ESOL skills at below Entry 3 and general education below Level 2.
The course will discuss topics for gaining knowledge on health, educational and social activities in the Leeds area and the surrounding towns and countryside.
The course will also include appropriate basic literacy and numeracy skills to enable you to participate and be aware of local services and activities e.g. public transport, libraries, museums, galleries, hospital services, schools and community events whilst improving your English language. The course is intended to improve literacy skills so that you may progress onto an Improver’s course or even accredited courses such as Functional skills.

*Eligibility rules apply for this course: Priority is given to those ordinarily resident in the UK with no restrictions under immigration laws on periods of stay.

The course is aimed primarily at parents and carers and people who live in the local community but speak their community language.
Course description in brief
The course will provide learners with the opportunity to discover their local environment and its history and the opportunities for educational and social activities in the Leeds area and the surrounding towns and countryside. The course will include appropriate literacy and numeracy skills to enable learners to participate more fully in local activities eg using public transport, accessing libraries, museums, galleries, community events. The course may include visits to local places of interest.
By the end of the course I will have learned:
1) Increase their knowledge of the geography of Leeds, Yorkshire and the UK
2) Be aware of the range of social and educational and travel opportunities in their local area
3) Have improved literacy and numeracy skills

- ‘F’: courses are accredited and are funded by the ‘Skills Funding Agency’ for those aged 16 and over.
- ‘L’ & ‘N’ courses for those aged 19 and over.
- ‘L’ courses are supported by Leeds City Council for Leeds Metropolitan area residents, priority given to those living in disadvantaged areas, people not in employment and/or in receipt of benefits, those with low skills, no qualifications, disadvantaged groups or individuals with specific needs e.g. lone parents, BAME groups, adults with LDD.
