Craftwork Enterprise course timetables

Brief description

A friendly learning environment, where craft methods and skills can be acquired, practised and enjoyed. Beginners and experienced learners will be able to produce some finished pieces.

Who is the course aimed at?

Adults with learning disabilities/difficulties who would like to learn some craft skills and gain some experience of selling their work.

Course description in brief

Learners will be able to work on some craft projects, as agreed by the group. Finished pieces can be taken home or offered for sale in the coffee bar. Proceeds from sales will go to an agreed charity. As well as learning some craft skills, learners will also be able to practise their maths, reading and writing, as well as customer service. The class is also an opportunity to meet new friends, share the learning experience and enjoy making things.

    • Carry out a craft activity (eg pinch pots, sewing)
    • Use and name some craft tools and techniques
    • Work out the cost of making one piece
    • Take part in selling finished work on the stall

What activities will I take part in and how will my course be structured?

The course runs for 33 weeks and is tailored to the pace of the learner group. There will be group and individual discussions, demonstrations of craft techniques and hands-on practise. We have regular selling opportunities in the Coffee Bar, and learners will get the chance to run the stall and manage transactions when sales are made. All learners are required to complete a learning log each week. Help will be provided in all activities by the tutor and LSA.

What will be expected of me in terms of personal or time commitment?

Please attend on time and inform Swarthmore if you cannot attend. You will need to read the learner handbook.

How will my learning be assessed and reviewed?

Continuous informal assessment through observation and discussion with tutor, other learners and LSA. Your learning aims, progress and achievement will be recorded on Individual Learning Plans.
You will keep a work log to record your activities and progress.

What could I go on to do after I have finished the course?

Further supported arts or crafts courses at Swarthmore or elsewhere.

How will I say what I think about the course?

Course Funding

Swarthmore provides a variety of courses some of which are subsidised by public funding.

Courses with course codes marked by ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ are subsidised and have age restrictions.

  • ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ courses for those aged 19 and over.
  • ‘LCC’ courses are supported by Leeds City Council for Leeds Metropolitan area residents, priority given to those living in disadvantaged areas, people not in employment and/or in receipt of benefits, those with low skills, no qualifications, disadvantaged groups or individuals with specific needs e.g. lone parents, BAME groups, adults with LDD.
