Who is the course aimed at?

This course is for anyone who is interested in learning how to write characters in a Gothic Style.

Whether you’re addressing wedding envelopes or you’re just looking for a new hobby, learning Calligraphy (blackletter) is a fun and challenging pursuit that anyone can enjoy!

By the end of the course I will have learned:

    Learnt how to write each letter of the alphabet in Gothic Style.
    Learnt how to write numbers in Gothic Style.

Do I need any skills, experience or qualifications before I join the course?

No previous experience required.

What equipment will I need for the course?

Swarthmore will provide basic equipment although your tutor will discuss with you any additional equipment you may wish to purchase

What activities will I take part in and how will my course be structured?

Demonstrations and practical activities.

What will be expected of me in terms of personal or time commitment?

Although there will be no official homework you may find it beneficial and relaxing to practice at home.

How will my learning be assessed and reviewed?

You will receive regular informal feedback throughout the course. You will also have an opportunity to record your progress and the tutor to give written feedback on your achievements.

What could I go on to do after I have finished the course?

You can speak to the tutor or our student adviser for advice on progression and other courses available.

How will I say what I think about the course?

You can speak to your tutor, make an appointment with the programme manager or speak to the student adviser about the course. You will also complete an end of course review and feedback.

Course Funding

Swarthmore provides a variety of courses some of which are subsidised by public funding.

Courses with course codes marked by ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ are subsidised and have age restrictions.

  • ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ courses for those aged 19 and over.
  • ‘LCC’ courses are supported by Leeds City Council for Leeds Metropolitan area residents, priority given to those living in disadvantaged areas, people not in employment and/or in receipt of benefits, those with low skills, no qualifications, disadvantaged groups or individuals with specific needs e.g. lone parents, BAME groups, adults with LDD.
