Chinese – Beginners course timetables

Brief description

This is an introduction to Chinese.

Learn how to communicate using the basics to get around while on holiday, social situations or meeting someone for the first time.

Course Outline

Who is the course aimed at?

People with little or no previous knowledge of the Chinese language.

An opportunity to meet new people and connect with people with similar interests.

This course is for anyone who would like to build confidence and learn new skills.

If you have been out of learning or work for some time then this could be just the course for you.

We welcome people from all parts of our community with the intention of offering an opportunity for people to improve their health and well being by being part of a friendly learning environment.

Course description in brief

Learn the basics – meeting and greeting, ordering food and drinks, finding your way about.

By the end of the course I will have learned:

    Basic phrases that will enable me to get by in a holiday situation

Do I need any skills, experience or qualifications before I join the course?

No previous experience or qualifications are needed to join. All you need is to want to ‘have a go’ and willingness to help create a supportive learning environment for all participants.

What equipment will I need for the course?

A ring binder and dividers would be useful to organise your handouts.

What materials will I need for the course?

N/A

What activities will I take part in and how will my course be structured?

Individual, pair and group activities – watching video clips and listening to recordings of native speakers. Usually one main topic will be covered per lesson, with follow up in subsequent lessons to help consolidate learning.

What will be expected of me in terms of personal or time commitment?

Please try to attend all classes and arrive on time. Of course, if you spend a little of your free time going over what we have covered, you’ll find the classes much easier!

How will my learning be assessed and reviewed?

You will take part in discussions with the tutor and class members/group throughout the course to continually review and assess your progress. You and your tutor will assess your progress and achievement during the course and at the end of the course with consideration for possible progression opportunities.
Progress will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan.

What could I go on to do after I have finished the course?

There are opportunities to progress onto other language courses within Swarthmore or higher level Chinese courses.

How will I say what I think about the course?

Throughout the course there are set times to evaluate and review your learning and discuss issues that may be of concern to you.
If you have any problems with the course talk to your tutor, or if you feel you can’t, make an appointment with the curriculum manager
At the end of the course you will be asked to fill in a simple feedback form.

Course Funding

Swarthmore provides a variety of courses some of which are subsidised by public funding.

Courses with course codes marked by ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ are subsidised and have age restrictions.

  • ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ courses for those aged 19 and over.
  • ‘LCC’ courses are supported by Leeds City Council for Leeds Metropolitan area residents, priority given to those living in disadvantaged areas, people not in employment and/or in receipt of benefits, those with low skills, no qualifications, disadvantaged groups or individuals with specific needs e.g. lone parents, BAME groups, adults with LDD.
