A short, informal course to help you learn the basic techniques of producing and linking Webpages using FrontPage or Wordpress.
Who is the course aimed at?
Anyone who has an interest in creating web pages for personal interest, community groups or business.
This course is for anyone who would like to build confidence and learn new skills. We welcome people from all parts of our community with the intention of offering an opportunity for people to improve their health and well-being by joining a friendly learning environment.
Course description in brief
A short, informal course to help you learn the basic techniques of producing and linking Webpages using FrontPage or WordPress. The course will give you the confidence and the knowledge to begin and design your own webpages using FrontPage or WordPress
By the end of the course I will have learned:
- Identify and use FrontPage/Word press Software appropriately
Create and name folders for your website files
Understand /Use elements of the Dashboard
Create pages/menus (Homepage/Gallery/Contact )
Import /insert images/image files
Understand/use hyperlinks including internal, external and email
Save /Update/Edit /website files
View your website using a web browser/preview
Do I need any skills, experience or qualifications before I join the course?
You will need experience of using a computer and working in a Windows environment. You will be able to use a mouse and keyboard, and be familiar with using Windows menus and toolbars and have some knowledge of creating folders as well as knowing how to use File, Save, Print.
If you have never used a computer before, it is strongly recommended that you first enrol on a beginner’s course to gain some basic keyboard and mouse skills, and generic Windows skills.
What equipment will I need for the course?
Bring along a notebook and pen to take notes. You may wish to bring a USB stick. You don’t have to buy a text book, but if you wish to do so the tutor will be able to provide details for you.
You may find it helpful to think of some ideas you could use when designing your own web site. Students are encouraged to make the course relevant to their own interests whenever possible
What materials will I need for the course?
All learning materials are provided by Swarthmore
What activities will I take part in and how will my course be structured?
The course will be guided by the tutor to develop your skills. There will be a mixture of tutor demonstrations and talks, group discussions, and practical tasks carried out with individual support from the tutor where required.
What will be expected of me in terms of personal or time commitment?
Attend the whole weekend for the course.
How will my learning be assessed and reviewed?
Your tutor will monitor your progress during the session and provide verbal feedback to you. Written feedback may be given on printed documents. You will complete a weekly log of things you’ve covered in the session and note any successes or concerns, and your tutor will monitor this and discuss it with you where appropriate. Progress will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan
What could I go on to do after I have finished the course?
You could enrol onto an accredited course and work towards the Web Page Creation unit at Level 1.
You could progress to other ICT courses in the centre.
How will I say what I think about the course?
If you have any problems with the course talk to your tutor, or if you feel you can’t, make an appointment with the curriculum manager
At the end of the course you will be asked to fill in a simple feedback form.

Courses with course codes marked by ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ are subsidised and have age restrictions.
- ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ courses for those aged 19 and over.
- ‘LCC’ courses are supported by Leeds City Council for Leeds Metropolitan area residents, priority given to those living in disadvantaged areas, people not in employment and/or in receipt of benefits, those with low skills, no qualifications, disadvantaged groups or individuals with specific needs e.g. lone parents, BAME groups, adults with LDD.
