Course Outline

Who is the course aimed at?

For people with severe barriers to learning or learning difficulties who need extra support in the classroom who would like to improve their computer skills.

We welcome people from all parts of our community with the intention of offering an opportunity for people to improve their health and well being by being part of a friendly learning environment.

Course description in brief

Introduction to basic computer skills and the use of other technologies. Build your confidence in using a computer, opening programmes. typing text, using images/pictures to create documents and flyers

By the end of the course I will have learned:

    Be able to turn a computer on/off.

    Be able to use a mouse & keyboards skills

    Open/close programs

    Gain basic knowledge and understanding of MS Word/Internet

    Be able use MS Word /Internet to create and save work.

    Be able to add pictures and images into documents

    Be more confident using a computer

Do I need any skills, experience or qualifications before I join the course?

None. New students need to have an interview with a tutor or our student advisor.

What equipment will I need for the course?

All equipment and learning materials will be provided by Swarthmore. It is recommended students have a folder to keep their work organised.

What materials will I need for the course?


What activities will I take part in and how will my course be structured?

There are lessons each week in term time. Students will get the chance to work individually and in small groups as part of the sessions.

What will be expected of me in terms of personal or time commitment?

To attend all classes and complete individual learning plan.

How will my learning be assessed and reviewed?

Each student will be assessed and work from their own strengths, at their own pace in a supportive teaching environment.

What could I go on to do after I have finished the course?

Be more independent and do other classes of interest at the centre.

How will I say what I think about the course?

Throughout the course there are set times to evaluate and review your learning and discuss issues that may be of concern to you.
If you have any problems with the course talk to your tutor, or if you feel you can’t, make an appointment with the curriculum manager
At the end of the course you will be asked to fill in a simple feedback form.

Course Funding

Swarthmore provides a variety of courses some of which are subsidised by public funding.

Courses with course codes marked by ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ are subsidised and have age restrictions.

  • ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ courses for those aged 19 and over.
  • ‘LCC’ courses are supported by Leeds City Council for Leeds Metropolitan area residents, priority given to those living in disadvantaged areas, people not in employment and/or in receipt of benefits, those with low skills, no qualifications, disadvantaged groups or individuals with specific needs e.g. lone parents, BAME groups, adults with LDD.
