This qualification is for those starting the first level of Counselling training or those who wish to develop counselling skills that can be used in their work. The course is 90 hours long. To achieve the qualification candidates must meet both internal and external standards of proficiency. Assessment methods include portfolio and exam.
Who is the course aimed at?
The course is aimed at individuals who want to take the first step towards becoming competent to help others in a voluntary or employed position. It provides a foundation in using counselling skills. This course does not teach you how to be a qualified counsellor but will equip you with listening and communication skills as a helper. It increases your awareness of your self-experience, beliefs and values, and of how these can influence your responses to others
Course description in brief
The course includes workshops, seminars, personal development workshops, and training group work. There is also an assignment and a presentation. The tutor is there to facilitate the group and give guidance by assessing learning and observing counselling skills practice sessions, which includes an audio and video recording. Tutorials provide support to ensure an understanding of counselling skills, and any concerns will be reviewed and discussed. The qualification is awarded by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) which is the only awarding body to specialise in the counselling field
By the end of the course I will have learned:
- You will have gained knowledge and understanding of the philosophy of person-centred counselling, how to use counselling skills by listening, reflecting, paraphrasing and summarising, and to understand relationships and increase your self-awareness of how you relate to others by being empathic whilst using self-reflection when using counselling skills. You will know what working competently, safely and ethically entails. You will learn the importance of maintaining boundaries whilst engaged in a helpful interaction with a person seeking help
Do I need any skills, experience or qualifications before I join the course?
No previous training or experience is required.
What materials will I need for the course?
A portfolio is required, so you will need a folder, A4 lined paper and pen/pencil for recording your work. You will be recording your counselling sessions so the tutor will give advice on how this is done
What activities will I take part in and how will my course be structured?
The course is designed to meet the needs of all learners, allowing them to attain an understanding of self-awareness and personal development. This is done by encouraging the formation of good working relationships with others on the course, in turn enabling learning through group discussion, small group exercises and practice in pairs. The overall structure allows the learners to be aware of what is being taught each week on the course by dates and scheme of work. Each year the course is updated to ensure it meets the learners’ needs. You will learn by practising the counselling skills needed to develop and maintain the person centred approach. Learners will watch recordings of Carl Rogers (the founder of person-centred therapy) to enhance their understanding and approach when using counselling skills. The exercises are designed to allow exploration of difference, such as belief, values, prejudices and diversity, which will cultivate empathy with others.
What will be expected of me in terms of personal or time commitment?
You will be expected to complete a Learning Journal (known as Learning Review) and coursework at home. There will be a presentation of up to 10 minutes, an audio tape and an assignment to write about yourself. The tutor is there to guide you and give support. This support is there for anyone who requires it and is returning to learning, so that they can have an enjoyable and positive experience on the course. The work consist of 2 – 3 hours of study each week. In order to gain the qualification, the learner will have to attend a minimum of 72 of the learning hours on the course. In order to gain maximum benefit from the course, sharing your experiences, feelings and participating within the group will be beneficial
How will my learning be assessed and reviewed?
Your learning be will assessed by the tutor, observing you using counselling skills. Feedback from peers will allow you to gain confidence towards becoming a competent reflective practitioner. There will be an external exam, which involves watching a recording of someone using counselling skills, and giving feedback. There will be ample time for you to practice counselling skills before you sit the exam. This course is ‘Criteria Referenced Course’, meaning you will select pages from your Learning Journal (known as a Learning Review) and your evaluation sheets to show your understanding and your ability to using counselling skills
What could I go on to do after I have finished the course?
Some people go into jobs such as the mental health sector. To do this it helps to have relevant work experience perhaps through voluntary work. Some people continue their training onto higher level qualifications at local educational organisations.
How will I say what I think about the course?
There is an opportunity at the beginning of each session to express feelings and thoughts. The tutor is also available if you wish to speak at any time. There is an evaluation form at the end of the course that you can complete
