Pottery course for families to learn together.

Course Outline

Who is the course aimed at?

For adults and children, who want to learn together. Parents or guardians with their school age children. Adults must be accompanied by up to 2 children.

Course description in brief

Come and have fun in our well-equipped pottery studio. Learn different techniques working together to produce creative ceramic pieces. Beginners welcome. As this course is funded by Leeds City Council, priority will be given to new learners in receipt of benefits. Only for adults accompanied by children. Max 2 children per adult.

By the end of the course I will have learned:

    To have an understanding of a range of materials and processes

    To be aware of health and safety in the pottery studio

    To have increased my confidence in learning

    Gained from the experience of learning alongside others

    New skills including hand building and trying out the potters wheel.

    To produce some pieces of pottery and to have fun

Do I need any skills, experience or qualifications before I join the course?

No previous experience required

What equipment will I need for the course?

None, all equipment is provided

What materials will I need for the course?

None, all materials are supplied. Please bring an old shirt, apron or overall to keep your clothes clean. An old towel will be needed when throwing on the potters wheel. There is a firing charge of £2.50 per kilo pot weight.

What activities will I take part in and how will my course be structured?

The tutor will demonstrate all activities before you try out a range of techniques using clay. Typical activities include making coil pots, model making and throwing on the potters wheel
The emphasis is on learning alongside other children/adults and to have fun while you increase your knowledge of pottery

What will be expected of me in terms of personal or time commitment?

Students should arrive promptly, and during the class clear up their own space. Students need to follow the safety rules in the pottery studio, and act responsibly at all times.

How will my learning be assessed and reviewed?

There will be on going peer group assessment, and tutor assessment. An individual learning log sheet is provided so that students can fill in a weekly diary, and keep track of their progress. This will be used for a review at the end of the course.

What could I go on to do after I have finished the course?

You can join other courses at Swarthmore, your tutor will be able to advise you towards the end of your course or speak to our Student Advisor

How will I say what I think about the course?

Throughout the course there are set times to evaluate and review your learning and discuss issues that may be of concern to you.

If you have any problems with the course talk to your tutor, or if you feel you can’t, make an appointment with the curriculum manager

At the end of the course you will be asked to fill in a simple feedback form.

Course Funding

Swarthmore provides a variety of courses some of which are subsidised by public funding.

Courses with course codes marked by ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ are subsidised and have age restrictions.

  • ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ courses for those aged 19 and over.
  • ‘LCC’ courses are supported by Leeds City Council for Leeds Metropolitan area residents, priority given to those living in disadvantaged areas, people not in employment and/or in receipt of benefits, those with low skills, no qualifications, disadvantaged groups or individuals with specific needs e.g. lone parents, BAME groups, adults with LDD.
