Who is the course aimed at?

Anyone who wants to improve how they feel; who wants to feel happier in themselves and in their life

Course description in brief

This is a very safe and supportive course. It has been running for a number of years now and participants frequently report that it has been of enormous benefit to them in their lives. We will have a different theme each week (for example – How to be my own best friend). The theme will be explored then an effective technique will be taught, which could be practiced over the week. There will be lots of time for supportive reflection and understanding

By the end of the course I will have learned:

Do I need any skills, experience or qualifications before I join the course?

None, just a willingness to improve the experience of your life

What equipment will I need for the course?

Many handouts will be provided as reminders of what we have covered. You may want to get a file to put all the handouts in.

What materials will I need for the course?


What activities will I take part in and how will my course be structured?

The sessions are always supportive, gentle and enjoyable. Everyone can go at their own pace and are free to share as much or as little as they feel comfortable with. There will be taught aspects to develop new skills; paired discussion & group discussion.

What will be expected of me in terms of personal or time commitment?

Regular attendance is encouraged as that will make the course more powerful.

How will my learning be assessed and reviewed?

Everyone will have an individual learning plan (ILP) which they will use to dentify their own personal goals for the course & reflect upon their progress. The ILP will be used to track the learning of new useful skills too.

What could I go on to do after I have finished the course?

After the course, you could attend a life coaching course, a mindfulness course, a confidence course, just as some of the possible directions

How will I say what I think about the course?

There will be an evaluation at the end of the course. There will be many opportunities for informal feedback as the course progresses.

Course Funding

Swarthmore provides a variety of courses some of which are subsidised by public funding.

Courses with course codes pre-fixed by a letter ‘F’, ‘L’ or ‘N’ are subsidised and have age restrictions.

  • ‘F’: courses are accredited and are funded by the ‘Skills Funding Agency’ for those aged 16 and over.
  • ‘L’ & ‘N’ courses for those aged 19 and over.
  • ‘L’ courses are supported by Leeds City Council for Leeds Metropolitan area residents, priority given to those living in disadvantaged areas, people not in employment and/or in receipt of benefits, those with low skills, no qualifications, disadvantaged groups or individuals with specific needs e.g. lone parents, BAME groups, adults with LDD.
