Course Outline

Who is the course aimed at?

Anyone who is interested in developing skills for using photographs creatively. An opportunity to meet people and make friends.
This course is for anyone who would like to build confidence and learn new skills. If you have been out of learning or work for some time then this could be just the course for you. We welcome people from all parts of our community with the intention of offering an opportunity for people to improve their health and well being by being part of a friendly learning environment.

Course description in brief

Initial starting point to explore the basics of Photoshop Elements 8. Explore your creative skills and edit and manipulate pictures. Gain confidence and go at your own pace! New features will be covered each term

By the end of the course I will have learned:

    Become familiar with Photoshop Interface and some of the tools.

    Become familiar with some of the tools to edit and manipulate pictures.

    Apply a range of effects to images using the gradients, patterns and blends

Do I need any skills, experience or qualifications before I join the course?

You will need some experience of using a computer and working in a Windows environment. You will be able to use a mouse and keyboard, and be familiar with using Windows menus and toolbars (eg File, Save, Print). You need to be able to read and follow instructions and take your own notes.
You need to see a tutor or our student advisor before joining the course.

What equipment will I need for the course?

You may wish to bring a notebook and a USB stick. It is recommended all students have a folder to organise their work.

What materials will I need for the course?

All learning materials will be provided by Swarthmore.

What activities will I take part in and how will my course be structured?

The course will be guided by the tutor to develop skills week by week. There will be a mixture of tutor demonstrations and talks, group discussions, and practical tasks carried out with individual support from the tutor where required.

What will be expected of me in terms of personal or time commitment?

Attend classes each week, complete an Individual Learning Plan and do any homework as required.

How will my learning be assessed and reviewed?

With tutor support, you will be able to demonstrate your learning and achievement throughout the course. This will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan

What could I go on to do after I have finished the course?

Progress to other ICT courses in the centre including accredited courses & Next Steps in PhotoShop.

How will I say what I think about the course?

Throughout the course there are set times to evaluate and review your learning and discuss issues that may be of concern to you.
If you have any problems with the course talk to your tutor, or if you feel you can’t, make an appointment with the curriculum manager
At the end of the course you will be asked to fill in a simple feedback form.

Course Funding

Swarthmore provides a variety of courses some of which are subsidised by public funding.

Courses with course codes marked by ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ are subsidised and have age restrictions.

  • ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ courses for those aged 19 and over.
  • ‘LCC’ courses are supported by Leeds City Council for Leeds Metropolitan area residents, priority given to those living in disadvantaged areas, people not in employment and/or in receipt of benefits, those with low skills, no qualifications, disadvantaged groups or individuals with specific needs e.g. lone parents, BAME groups, adults with LDD.
