Maths Workshop (Level 1 & Entry 3) course timetables

Brief description

These classes will help you gain confidence and enable you to use maths in your everyday life, at work or with your children.

Classes are designed to improve your confidence and give you the skills you need to get on in life and in employment.

Course Outline

Who is the course aimed at?

People who would like to build confidence in maths and problem solving skills. People who wish to improve their Maths skills and gain a recognised Functional Skills qualification at E3 or L1.

This course is for anyone who would like to build confidence and learn new skills. If you have been out of learning or work for some time then this could be just the course for you.

We welcome people from all parts of our community with the intention of offering an opportunity for people to improve their health and well-being by joining a friendly learning environment.

Course description in brief

Course content follows the national maths core curriculum.

Topics covered include percentages, fractions, shape and measure, ratios.

Classes are based around real world situations and problem solving to help the subject come to life.

By the end of the course I will have learned:

    Improved numeracy and problem solving skills.

    Gained a nationally recognised Functional Skills qualification at E3 or L1

Do I need any skills, experience or qualifications before I join the course?

Individuals need to have a numeracy assessment to establish their existing skill level.

What equipment will I need for the course?

All equipment and learning materials will be provided by Swarthmore.

There will be access to on line learning.

It is recommended students have a folder to keep their work organised. You may wish to purchase an appropriate text book.

What materials will I need for the course?


What activities will I take part in and how will my course be structured?

There are lessons each week in term time.

Students will get the chance to work individually and in small groups as part of the sessions.

What will be expected of me in terms of personal or time commitment?

To attend all classes and complete individual learning plan.

Commitment to completing homework and additional study each week.

Complete the course and take exams.

How will my learning be assessed and reviewed?

Each student will be assessed and work from their own strengths, at their own pace in a supportive teaching environment.

Progress will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan.

There will be exams at the end of the course.

What could I go on to do after I have finished the course?

Progress to higher level maths classes

How will I say what I think about the course?

Throughout the course there are set times to evaluate and review your learning and discuss issues that may be of concern to you.

If you have any problems with the course talk to your tutor, or if you feel you can’t, make an appointment with the curriculum manager

At the end of the course you will be asked to fill in a simple feedback form.

Course Funding

Swarthmore provides a variety of courses some of which are subsidised by public funding.

Courses with course codes marked by ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ are subsidised and have age restrictions.

  • ‘LCC’ and ‘CityC’ courses for those aged 19 and over.
  • ‘LCC’ courses are supported by Leeds City Council for Leeds Metropolitan area residents, priority given to those living in disadvantaged areas, people not in employment and/or in receipt of benefits, those with low skills, no qualifications, disadvantaged groups or individuals with specific needs e.g. lone parents, BAME groups, adults with LDD.
